Project Management Lessons from the GTG-1002 Claude Attack

OVERVIEW

In this session, we’ll unpack one of the most significant AI-driven cyber incidents of the year: the China-linked GTG-1002 attack that hijacked Anthropic’s Claude. Rather than viewing the event purely through a cybersecurity lens, we’ll explore what project managers can learn from how the attackers used AI to rapidly break down complex challenges, automate multi-stage execution, and bypass controls.

We’ll also examine how these same AI capabilities — when used ethically — can strengthen planning, governance, and delivery across modern projects. The talk connects the incident back to core PM domains including scope, planning, risk, issues, benefits, stakeholders, and control, highlighting how AI is reshaping digital, energy, and infrastructure project environments.

This session assumes basic workplace AI knowledge (prompting, RAG, and applied use cases). We encourage discussion, curiosity, and networking — and the event is a great opportunity to connect with project management peers and recruiters.

Guiding Principles
• Foster a safe space to explore and share AI in projects.
• Value participation and learning over polish.
• Encourage curiosity, questions, and fresh ideas.
• Build community through shared growth and support.
• Champion responsible and ethical use of AI.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Understand how the GTG-1002 attackers used AI to automate, scale, and sequence complex tasks — and what this reveals about emerging project risks.
  • Learn ethical, practical ways to leverage similar AI capabilities to improve planning, governance, and execution.
  • Identify risks AI introduces into digital, energy, and infrastructure projects (misuse, jailbreaking, uncontrolled open-source models).
  • Explore how AI is transforming core PM domains: scope, planning, risk, issues, benefits, stakeholders, and delivery controls.
  • Gain actionable strategies to harness AI’s strengths while safeguarding teams, systems, and project outcomes.

Scott Spence

With expertise in project management, international consulting, leadership and training, I possess a comprehensive background in leading and executing projects for private enterprises, government and international bodies worldwide. I have effectively guided organisations in adopting and implementing clear and standardised project processes that have been customised to the organisation culture and regulatory environment, ultimately bridging the gap between strategy and project delivery.

I have extensive experience in facilitating project teams to foster connection, collaboration, negotiation, conflict resolution, and co-designing stakeholder engagement in complex environments. My expertise includes guiding groups to work collaboratively and achieve outcomes that benefit their organizations, aligning with strategic goals.

I am adept at applying best practice methodologies, customized to integrate with internal processes. This leverages my extensive knowledge of PRINCE2 and Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) an implementing projects. By adapting these methodologies, processes, and skills to the needs of each project, I have effectively implemented agile techniques and traditional linear sequential methodologies, such as waterfall or a combination of both, tailored to suit the specific requirements of a project.
