Creating Successful Data Stories | April Chapter Event
OVERVIEW
Have you ever experienced (or seen) during a presentation that the audience just doesn't seem to understand what you're saying? And afterwards it feels like nothing happens? Or you're asked yet again to re-cut the data and endlessly explaining yourself? The issue is usually fundamental. And the solution is not to become more complex and advanced. Presentations and reports that include data often rely on overloaded visuals, unclear messaging and too much detail to process or act upon. We want good decisions to be made from the right insights, less rework and more freedom, and most importantly faster, better decisions that reduce time wasted and increase profitability. In this session, we'll look at exactly how to understand your audience and how you can adapt to speak their natural language. We'll explore how to ensure your presentation doesn't leave people thinking "so what do we do next?" and drives future change. And we'll also share the system that our clients use to take complex data and turn it into unmistakably clear visuals - and yes I will share which chart to choose!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Understand the journey of data from analysis to action
- How to quickly and accurately understand your audience and the gaps in their knowledge
- The framework to ensure every data presentation has a "so what?" and is future-focused
- The four-step system to turn data into unmistakable (and not overloaded) visualisations
OUR SPEAKER

Thomas Krafft
Director | Blue Box Data Storytelling
Thomas Krafft is the director and head trainer for Blue Box Data Storytelling. He helps data teams to find the story in their insights and communicate narratives that drive business decisions. When data people can’t share what the data is telling them, every dollar we spend on data collection, storage, analysis and presentation is wasted. Data only delivers return when it changes a decision, shifts a priority, reallocates budget, or stops something that shouldn’t continue. How to do that is what Thomas will cover tonight. He has a history in aviation, developing a real understanding of the importance of conveying critical information. Combined with a love of on-stage speaking, where he is energetic, inclusive and engaging with audiences. When he's not working, he is a lover of the outdoors; you'll usually find him up a mountain or volunteering removing marine plastics from local waterways.
