Megaprojects: Learning to Eat the Elephant in the Room | July Chapter Event

Business Acumen

Overview

The word "Megaproject" gets thrown around a lot these days – but what are they, and how are they different from other projects? More importantly, what strategies are critical to their successful delivery?

In this session, we’ll get you up to speed on what you need to know about megaprojects and why they behave differently from other projects.

But more importantly, we will dive into the latest research on how to deliver them successfully. This research explores how systems thinking shapes delivery strategies and the key behavioural biases at play – including reference class forecasting and the optimism bias versus strategic misrepresentation debate.

By the end of the evening, not only will you be ready to eat the elephant one mouthful at a time, you’ll know how many calories you’ll be consuming, if you will spike your glucose and when to use the spork.

Takeaways / Lessons

  • Understand what megaprojects are and why they are different from other projects.
  • Gain insight into the leading research into megaproject delivery.
  • Understand why mega projects are so hard to deliver on time and on budget and what we can do about it.
