Working Together; Professors and Professionals
Find out more about the recent advances and technological breakthroughs in project management and the construction areas.
Dr Tingting Liu from Griffith University will present on her research team’s work on modern slavery in the property and construction industry. Modern slavery is seen as the dark side of construction projects. Some construction projects use modern slavery to reduce labour cost. With the introduction of the Modern Slavery Act 2018 in Australia, it is important that effective processes, systems and mechanisms be in place to address modern slavery risk. The presentation will provide insights into the good practices and approach in tackling modern slavery in the construction industry in Australia.
Dr Amirhossein Heravi from USQ will speak about his research project that aims to develop an Integrated Solution based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Structural Health Monitoring of infrastructure projects. A UAV-enabled platform integrates with digital image correlation (DIC), allowing for enhanced damage detection of structural components of the project. During this process, one of the essential steps is to manage collected data in an integrated format and create a cloud-based database that can be used for operation and maintenance purposes from remote locations and offices. BIM provides an effective data management platform where information from UAV and DIC will be used to create a visualised model of the structure critical points in a 3-D format; thus, it is leveraged in this project. This project capitalises on the benefits of Scan to BIM, where the scanned data can be imported into a 3D modelling environment to create accurate as-built models for critical infrastructure projects. Outcomes fo this research will facilitate more effective evaluation of and maintenance for infrastructure projects, eventually resulting in increased asset service life.
